Panacur is Merck Animal Health's fenbendazole: 22.2% granules in single-day packets for dogs, 10% apple-cinnamon paste in dial-a-dose syringes for horses. Nearly fifty years on clinic shelves, still the dewormer veterinarians reach for when they want broad coverage with a wide safety margin.

Active ingredient & how it works
Fenbendazole, a benzimidazole anthelmintic, at 222 mg per gram of canine granules and 100 mg per gram of equine paste. It kills slowly and on purpose — starving the worm's cells of the scaffolding they use to absorb food — which is why the dog course runs three consecutive mornings and the equine Powerpac protocol runs five. Sustained contact beats one heroic wave.

Side effects & safety
The label's own count from US clinical studies: 3 of 240 dogs — about 1% — had vomiting associated with the product, and that is the list. Panacur C is approved for puppies from six weeks, adult dogs, and pregnant dams; there is no breed exclusion on the panel.
Two cautions ride with that record. Do not worm a dog or puppy that is already sick — diagnose first, treat second. And as dead worms leave over the days after a heavy course, soft stool can follow; persistent or bloody stool is a call to the clinic, not a shrug.
Species line — packets vs paste
Dogs get granule packets that vanish into food; horses get dialed paste over the tongue — one syringe covers 1,100 lb. Nothing crosses the aisle: a horse syringe is not a bargain dog dose, dog packets do not stack to a draft mare, and cats belong in a vet's exam room, not this table.
When to call the veterinarian first
Parasite diagnosis is microscope work — bring a stool sample before and after a course. Keep pups on the 6-8-10-12 week calendar with the dam treated alongside, run the equine Powerpac only on a vet's instruction, and never dose a sick animal on a website's say-so, including this one.
